Overview

Games Workshop are the world's largest table top gaming brand, offering multiple IPs for die hard fans from the futuristic Warhammer 40k, fantasy Warhammer and even sports, such as Bloodbowl. What we needed to solve was how to provide a tailored end-to-end solution for the competitive players and organisers at all scales from local stores, to international tournaments with thousands of players.

The solution needed to allow for game specific evolving rules, army customisation, global leaderboards and the encouragement of good sportsmanship between players as well as incorporating gamification mechanics to ensure user retention and a sense of progression and personalisation for all involved.

We started by running a design sprint with the competitive gaming team to capture all the requirements from a rule set and organiser perspective. As well as how all points and results needed to feed into their global ranking table for international seeded events such as the Las Vegas Open.

Next we used the Warhammer World to interview competitive players about what they would like to see in the final product, what they were currently using, its strengths and weaknesses and demo some initial prototypes for feedback.

Once all the user and market research was complete alongside the IA and UX documentation, we started work on creating a new design system that would be ‘themable’ allowing for all of Games Workshop's IPs to be reflected in the final product. This approach would allow for future functionality within the product roadmap to be easily rolled out across all IPs and ensure a consistent user experience and to streamline the QA process.
