Healthwatch is a fully independent and impartial organization with over 150 local Healtwatches across England that are dedicated to understanding the issues that matter most to local communities. They gather and analsye users' experiences of health and social care services to drive meaningful improvements.
If you've ever used GPs, hospitals, dentists, pharmacies, care homes, or other support services, you’ve likely had the chance to share your experience with Healthwatch. Last year alone, they empowered nearly a million people like you to voice their opinions and access the information and advice they needed. The detailed and accurate data gathered from these interactions is invaluable for anyone connected to health and social care services.
With a wide national presence and over 150 regional Healthwatches, each operating independently with unique teams, IT systems, and processes, Healthwatch faced an opportunity to bring greater consistency to their data.
By standardizing the structure and format of the diverse national data, there was an opportunity to be able to compare insights more effectively on a national scale, unlocking even greater and more impactful outcomes
A portal to upload and standardise data entry
The solution was simple in essence: data normalisation.
Each local Healthwatch required a system that could consume their unique .csv and Excel files, matching their fields and inputs to the correct global data structure and taxonomy. Once this mapping was completed, each Healthwatch could easily upload their extensive data records, ensuring all data points were standardised and accurate.
To facilitate this, we created a custom platform using Symfony and ReactJS which allows users to transform and normalise their diverse data formats, making use of technologies such as fuzzy matching in order to automatically suggest field pairings to the user. Our solution allows users to save their field pairings for future sessions and share these with other local Healthwatches that use similar data formats, helping to reduce workloads across the business.
